PayPal Marketplace Demo
Walk through the full journey: pay as a customer → manage billing → PayPal marketplace (partners & money flow) → platform admin. Real PayPal sandbox where credentials allow; complete each step to see progress.
Step 1: Pay as a customer
See how a customer pays with PayPal Checkout (sandbox).
In a real app, the customer picks a plan and pays. Here you'll go through PayPal Checkout (sandbox) to simulate paying for the Pro Plan — $20 (uses a subscription if PAYPAL_PLAN_ID is set, otherwise a one-time order).
Step 2: Manage billing
Cancel or update payment methods — PayPal hosts the UI.
Customers need a place to cancel, update payment methods, and manage subscriptions. PayPal hosts account / autopay management — you link out, PayPal hosts the UI.
Step 3: Enter the marketplace world
How platforms split payments with PayPal.
PayPal Marketplace / Commerce Platform is how platforms onboard partners and split payments: the customer pays once, the platform keeps a fee, and the partner gets the rest. Next steps let you play both “partner” and “customer”.
Step 4: Become a partner
Onboard as a PayPal seller / partner — you'll open sandbox signup.
As the platform, you need partners to receive payouts. With PayPal seller onboarding (Partner Referrals when approved), the partner goes through hosted signup. You'll open PayPal sandbox; when you return, this step is complete.
Step 5: Pay with a split
Customer pays; platform fee + partner share.
Now the customer pays again—but this time, if you have a partner merchant, the payment is split: platform fee (10%) stays with you, the rest goes to the partner. Same PayPal Checkout, different destination.
Complete “Become a partner” first so this payment can be split. Otherwise the full amount goes to the platform.
Step 6: Partner dashboard
Earnings, pending balance, and PayPal business dashboard.
As the partner, you see earnings and payouts in PayPal. Here we show balance data from the demo partner ledger (updated when you run split checkout). You can also open the PayPal sandbox business dashboard.
Complete “Become a partner” to see balance data here. You can still open the PayPal dashboard below.
Step 7: Platform admin
All transactions, fees, and partner destinations.

Step 8: Under the hood
Money flow, simulated webhooks, and the event log.
